The Westing Game is being adapted for HBO Max

In a stroke of amazing news, Ellen Raskin’s 1978 mystery The Westing Game has been announced as the latest project to be tackled by HBO Max.

According to Variety, the news comes as part of an effort to expand HBO Max’s young adult appeal. To that end, a reboot of Pretty Little Liars and a sequel series to Gossip Girl are also on the way.

The original novel begins with the death of Samuel Westing, a reclusive millionaire. His will is structured like a puzzle, bringing together four pairs of tenants in an apartment building to compete against each other and claim the inheritance. The star of the show is a smart young girl named Turtle, who is fond of kicking people in the shin.

This is the second time that the novel has been adapted for the screen, following a Showtime TV movie in 1997.

There is no showrunner yet attached to the series, though Julie Corman, who currently owns the rights to the novel, will serve as an executive producer.
